Pontefract
Overview
Pontefract is a picturesque medieval market town situated in the Wakefield district of West Yorkshire, a historic and mystical county with many stories and legends associated with its bleak moorlands and deep valleys. In fact it was the rugged and wild landscape of West Yorkshire that inspired the creative genius of the Bronte sisters and when you visit Pontefract you too will be inspired by the history and beauty of this ancient town. History seeps from the very walls of Pontefract and there is hardly a nook or cranny that does not have a tale to tell. Head on up to Pontefract Castle which used to hold the title of one of the greatest castles in England and which played a major role in the Civil War. Discover the heritage of Pontefract in the quaint and historical quarters on Market Place, Ropergate and Shoe Market and perhaps if you are brave enough you can go on one of the town’s ghost walks and hear more about the ghoulish goings-on!
